This is the home page and the documentation wiki of BookLiberator.

BookLiberator is a set of free software and hardware to digitize books: it lets you photograph all the pages in a book without harming the book. The resulting images can be processed with free, open source software to make user-friendly files in a variety of formats.

If you would like to help improve the pages in this wiki, just register for an account and get started.

Some pages need more attention than others. We're particularly interested in improvements to our software and hardware documentation. But you can also use this wiki to tell the world about your own experiences with BookLiberator. Even (especially!) failed experiments are worth sharing.

BookLiberator is an ambitious project that is just getting off the ground. We're going to need a lot of people to jump on board if this is going to work.

Software

There is a list of shallow bugs that can be fixed in short order, even by people who aren't familiar with the bkrpr codebase. You'll need basic python and gtk skills to play along, but the best way to learn the code is to jump in and fix something simple.

BookLiberator is written in Python and requires that you have a working Python environment. In addition, it has some dependencies: numpy, tesseract, psyco and pygtk. You'll need to install both of these for BookLiberator to work.

DIY Book Scanner

The DIY Book Scanner project is doing very similar work with very similar parts. If you're looking for alternate designs along the same lines, they're the first place to look.
